How much does it cost to curl?
Current fees can be viewed on our website; www.peterboroughcurlingclub.ca . Hover over the “Club Information+” button.
How long is the curling season?
The curling season begins the day after Thanksgiving in October and runs to the end of March/first week of April.
What does Curling Equipment Cost?
You do not need to invest a lot of money in equipment. The PCC has brooms and delivery sticks you can borrow as well as temporary sliders and “rubber grippers” that attach to your shoes to grip the ice as you move down the sheet. You need clean running shoes that you do not wear outside as well as loose-fitting clothing. The use of head protection is highly recommended. If you choose to buy equipment, our sponsors Imprinted Apparel/Peterborough Curling Store is your one stop shop for all things curling!
Do I need experience or lessons?
No experience is required and if you just want to dive into a league, there are lots of us who will give you a hand and teach you on the fly. However, most new curlers would benefit from one of our Learn to Curl leagues. The PCC offers two options – a full season of curling instruction, practice and game playing or a half season (Fall or Winter) Learn to Curl league.
Are there age limits?
Curling is highly adaptable and can be played by people of all ages and physical abilities. Members of the PCC range in age from 8 to over 90 years.
What if am unable to execute the rock delivery?
Many of our curlers have stayed with the game into their senior years by moving to “stick curling” that does not require them to get down to (and up from!) the hack but is just as challenging and fun. We also have active wheelchair curlers in all of our adult leagues. Indeed, John Thurston who took the Gold at the last Paralympic games curls with our club.
Is curling a family oriented sport?
Yes, frequently spouses and even entire families join and play together. We have leagues for the whole family from our popular Junior league on Sundays to our adult nighttime and daytime leagues.
How long are the games?
Most games are scheduled to last 2 hours (considered an 8-end game).
What leagues can I play in?
Including our junior and high school leagues, PCC has 21 different leagues such as Friday Afternoon Mixed, Tuesday Evening Men, Novice and so on. You can find a description of each league on our webpage by clicking “Our Leagues” and then the “League Overview” button. You can choose to play in as few or as many leagues as you wish.
Do I have to enter with a team or can I (and possibly my partner) enter as individuals?
Some PCC leagues use a team play format where a team of 4 or 5 (or 2 in the case of Open Doubles) play consistently together against other teams. You can certainly register in such a league as an individual or couple and the section head of that league will assign you to a team, based on your experience or requests for a particular position. Of course, if you have a foursome that wishes to curl together you can register together. Senior men and women also can play in a “tag” format. When you register for tag curling, a tag with you name is created. When you show up for a game, the “tag master” will make up teams on the fly. It is a great way to meet fellow curlers and many of our members enjoy not having to commit to curling every week.
What if I join a team and cannot make a game?
The PCC maintains a list of curlers who are willing to spare, listing the positions they are able to fill (skip, vice, etc.) Also, some leagues will have more teams than there are sheets of ice available in which case a team or two in that league would be given a “bye”. This means there will be 4 or 8 curlers to approach to spare.
Should I be worried that I am not very athletic and that I will be intimidated by other curlers?
Not a chance! The PCC is about having fun on the ice and developing friendships off the ice (over a beverage or two). You will start out in the lead position and you can move up as you get more comfortable. You will find your fellow curlers encouraging and supportive – that is the nature of the sport. It has been said that, should your employer transfer you to a new town, the first thing you should do is join the local curling club. You will have good friends in no time.
What if I need to stop due to health or life changes?
The PCC has a refund policy that will rebate members having to withdraw for health reasons that rebates the membership fee paid prorated to reflect the proportion of the season remaining.
Can I curl and still go south every year?
The PCC offers half year memberships. You can register for the fall term (October to December) or the winter (January to April).
